Ghana insurance in brief: 30 October 2026

Major Emmanuel Deladem Nkornoo, an audiologist at 37 Military Hospital and immediate past President of the Speech Therapists and Audiologists Association of Ghana (STAAG), has called for audiology and speech and language therapy services, including hearing aids, to be added to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Audiologist calls for NHIS cover for hearing aids

He also asked the government to waive taxes on imported hearing aids. He put the price of average-quality devices in Ghana at between GH¢10,000 and GH¢25,000, adding that most are imported from Western countries and priced in foreign currency. He said "the average Ghanaian cannot afford them at the prevailing exchange rates."

Major Nkornoo said untreated hearing loss can harm children's education, psychological well-being and social development. He urged corporate organisations and private investors to help set up audiology and speech and language therapy facilities, which he said would widen access and create jobs for qualified professionals.
