Nana Akomea raises concerns over NIC's new Ghana Card step for vehicle insurance

Nana Akomea has raised concerns about a new National Insurance Commission (NIC) process for completing vehicle insurance, saying it made his renewal harder rather than easier, the Ghanaian Times reported on 28 October 2026.

In a Facebook post, Mr Akomea said he renewed his vehicle insurance and paid the premium to his insurance company. The insurer then told him he would receive a link through which to send his Ghana Card details and a photograph to the NIC to complete the process.

He questioned the extra step, saying his insurer already held his Ghana Card details and photograph in its database. He said he went through the online process, but the system repeatedly returned a message that his photograph could not be verified. After five attempts, he stopped trying.

Mr Akomea described the process as an obstacle to digitalisation and said some institutions had turned it into "an obstacle course". He said he was unsure of the status of his vehicle insurance, although he had paid the premium.

The NIC made the Ghana Card compulsory for buying or renewing motor insurance from 1 January 2026, CitiNewsroom reported in December 2025. A statement signed by Acting Commissioner of Insurance Dr Abiba Zakariah said corporate clients must also submit a Tax Identification Number, and that the measure was intended to improve transparency and claims handling, support know-your-customer and anti-money laundering checks, and reduce fraud.

Accra Street Journal reported in October 2026 that under the NIC's biometric verification framework, policyholders provide their Ghana Card PIN and the mobile number linked to their National Identification Authority (NIA) record and approve an SMS link, while insurers hold back policy generation until a verification token arrives from the NIA gateway.
