The Greater Accra Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has held its 2025 First Quarter Performance Review Meeting at its Regional Office Conference Room in Accra.
The meeting brought together district managers, technical officers, and regional staff to evaluate the region’s progress toward achieving its annual targets.
In his opening remarks, the Acting Regional Director, Mr. Samuel Sowah Oblejumah, commended staff for their punctuality and dedication. He noted that the region had achieved an Annual Active Membership of 2,284,033 representing 66.2% of the 2025 target of 3,448,870 and called on all district offices to intensify efforts in the remaining quarters.
Mr. Oblejumah echoed the vision of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama to improve access to quality healthcare for people with non-communicable diseases, as outlined in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (popularly known as Mahama Cares) and the new Free Primary Healthcare initiative.
Touching on NHIA-wide reforms, he referenced Acting CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe’s commitment to addressing illegal charges and co-payments, as well as improving the payment of claims. Mr. Oblejumah also outlined his vision for the Greater Accra Region to lead the way in achieving annual targets and support Ghana’s path to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
A comprehensive presentation by Mr. Daniel Duedu, the Regional Data Analytics Team Lead, revealed that Greater Accra remains Ghana’s most populous region, with over 6.1 million residents about 18% of the national population. Mr. Duedu stressed the need for the region to maintain a 12% growth rate in active membership annually to meet UHC targets. He noted with concern that 580,838 people in the region failed to renew their NHIS cards in 2024 and encouraged staff to prioritize renewals over new registrations for greater efficiency.
The Tema District Office was named the Best Performing District, achieving 80.9% of its membership target by the end of Q1. Ga Central NHIS Office followed with 70.9%.
On revenue, the region mobilized GH?5.1 million 71% of its flexed provisional target of GH?6.5 million. Ga Central again stood out by exceeding its revenue target by 12%. Regional Accountant Mr. Kofi Amoako highlighted that mobile renewals contributed 71% of total revenue, confirming its dominance as the most efficient revenue stream.
Closing the meeting, Mr. Oblejumah lauded the resilience and hard work of district staff despite challenges, affirming that their efforts are crucial to the NHIA’s broader national goals.
District representatives agreed that the insights and data shared during the review would help shape more strategic decisions and drive improved performance across the region.
